To be honest, German cuisine is the worst among those I know well: sausages, cabbage, weird pieces of fat (called Musik, probably after music that you make in the toilet after eating it). So here are five gastronomic masterpieces that I met during my life in Germany and that made me suffer.
1. Milk rice (Milchreis)
Just like in Russia there are tons of milk products in Germany and you never know what's the difference between them before you actually try. Once I made an experiment buying several puddings, quarks etc.
There was something called "Milk rice" with chocolate (up left in the picture). I thought it was called like that because it was kinda like Russian cottage cheese. The main conclusion from the experiment: if Germans say something they really mean it. If it's written "rice" there's really rice inside! Freaking rice in some milky liquid and with chocolate. Rare trash. So, the second conclusion: never ever again I'm gonna buy Milchreis.
UPD: once I saw some pretty, presumably chocolate, pudding in uni canteen. I took it, anticipating enjoying tasty dessert and it turned out to be this freaking Milchreis. The black day of my life.
2. Potato salad (Kartofellnsalat)
I was surprised to find out in uni canteen how much stuff you can make out of potato: fried, boiled, puree, pancakes, pancakes with cheese inside... But there is something completely not eatable: potato salad. It's cold and is served as a side dish to hot meat/fish which makes it a hundred times more disgusting.
I was told Kartofellnsalat can and should be tasty but it's hard to believe.
3. Bread with walnuts
Probably, it sounds not that terrible, but believe me, even if you take each nut out of bread you would still feel this disgusting taste.
4. Bolognese with carrots
I guess Italians are used to see their national cuisine perverted in all possible ways but I've never met such horror. They put carrots into the bolognese!
Probably someone would find it quite innocent but I don't respect boiled carrot and this variation seems to me as a total pasta abuse.
5. Eggs in sandwiches
For some reason, Germans feel that their duty is to put a slice of boiled egg in EVERY sandwich. A cold and slimy egg. Once I got a sandwich with an egg and with the walnut bread, I still see it in the nightmares...
